Lawyers in anti-bully case seek legal fees

HUDSON, Mich. (AP) — The lawyers who got an $800,000 verdict in an anti-bullying trial are asking a judge to order a Michigan school district to pay thousands more in legal fees.

The lead counsel, Terry Heiss, says he deserves $309,000 and two other lawyers together should receive $104,000.

A federal jury in March ordered Hudson Area Schools to pay $800,000 to a former student who says he was humiliated and assaulted in middle school and high school. The school district near the Michigan-Ohio border was accused of being deliberately indifferent to the abuse.

In a filing last week, Heiss says his hours on the case added up to 1,123 hours or 28 work weeks. Hudson hasn’t responded in court. The lawyers will be entitled to some payment.
