Befitting a running event, the 31st annual Race Judicata sponsored by the Oakland County Bar Association has staying power, thanks to scores of participants who ventured out last Sunday morning for the chance to test their conditioning mettle.

Early morning thunderstorms gave way to cool and windy conditions for the May 2 event, which included a 5-kilometer walk and 5-km and 10-km races. The walk and runs started at Andover High School in Bloomfield Hills, venturing along scenic and hilly country roads before climaxing with a lap around the school’s outdoor track.

David McDaniel, 41, was the top male finisher in the 5-km race, covering the 3.1-mile course in 21:05. Aaron Sherbin took second place honors in 21:07, while James O’Brien was third with a 21:10 clocking.

Michelle Gartland, 28, was first among females in the 5-km race, finishing in 23:34. Runner-up was Dawn MacAddino in 24:37. Placing third was Kim Hidlay in 24:47.

In the men’s 10-km race, Doug Goodhoe, 68, was first in 40:28. Todd Kelly took second place with a 40:45 showing, while Joe Hart was third in 41:35.

Emilija Avsharian, 32, was the top female runner in the 10-km race, going the 6.2-mile distance in 49:38. Jessica VanWert was second in 53:22, while Karen Clay took third in 54:27.

In the 5-km Legal Team contest, a three-runner squad from Jaffe, Raitt, Heuer & Weiss claimed first place honors in a combined time of 58:58. Members of the winning team were Marko Belej, David McDaniel, and Aaron Sherbin.

Winning the 10-km Legal Team competition was the Bodman squad of Brandon Dalziel, Jessica VanWert, and Karen Clay, combining for a time of 1:41:34.

Judy Cunningham was first among females in the 5-km walk, crossing in 41:03. Brittany MacAddino was second in 42:08 and Lillian Epstein third in 43:44. Among males, Kevin MacAddino was first in 42:08, followed by John Bryant in second (47:15) and Edgar Pugh in third (48:50).

Members of the race committee included: chair Amanda Kill (Ahern Fleury), vice chair David Saperstein ( Maddin Hauser Wartell Roth & Heller, P.C. ), Meredith Taunt (Strobl & Sharp), Fred Freeman ( Law Office of Fred Freeman), Diana Moak (Pugh Moak, P.C. ) and Paul Keller (Harness, Dickey & Pierce).
