State Supreme Court rules family didn’t have right to woman’s brain
LANSING (AP) — The Michigan Supreme Court says an Oakland County family had no legal right to a dead woman’s brain when her body was returned after an autopsy in 2006.
Karen Waeschle of Waterford filed a lawsuit after becoming alarmed that her mother’s body was cremated without the brain. It was not released with other remains because it had to be hardened before being examined by the medical examiner.
In a 5-2 decision Friday, the Supreme Court said state law in 2006 allowed a medical examiner to keep body parts for as long as necessary. The law was changed this year to require notification.
Justices Robert Young Jr. and Alton Davis dissented because they didn’t believe it was necessary to get involved.

IABAM to host annual Winter Gala Dec. 3 at Detroit Athletic Club
The Italian American Bar Association of Michigan (IABAM) is hosting its annual Winter Gala at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3 at The Detroit Athletic Club. The Winter Gala will feature hors d’oeuvres, premium bar, dinner and dessert bar. The event will feature live music and entertainment. A highlight of the evening will be the presentation of scholarships and awards. The ticket price is $100 per person or $1,000 for a table of ten. The ticket price for students is $50 per person.
