Lansing: Authorities say brutalized pit bulls found
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say a brutalized pit bull was found dead and frozen in a cage at a Lansing park.

The Lansing State Journal reports the dog was found Friday at Ingham Park. The discovery came two days after a pit bull was found beaten, tied up and left for dead in Lansing.

Capital Area Humane Society CEO Julia Palmer says she knew of no evidence that linked the two cases.

Ingham County Animal Control Director Jamie McAloon Lampman says his office has seen other “heinous neglect and abuse cases” in the past year.

Detroit: School board OKs deal that could end 2009 lawsuit
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Board of Education has approved a settlement that could return academic control to its members.

The Detroit News reports the board voted 10-1 in favor of the agreement on Monday night.

The settlement could bring to a close a 2009 lawsuit that Detroit Public Schools officials filed and won against Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb.

The Detroit Free Press says the suit’s outcome essentially establishes that the board, not Bobb, controls academic decisions in the district and limits his authority to financial matters.

Bobb has to approve the settlement.

If he doesn’t, the sides will be in court on Feb. 11.

That’s according to the board’s attorney, George Washington, who says a judge would sign an order stipulating how the separation of academic and financial powers would work.

Detroit: Feds in Detroit get guilty plea in hooker probe
DETROIT (AP) — A woman charged with lining up business for an international prostitution ring has pleaded guilty in federal court in Detroit.

Nayubet Swaso is the third person to plead guilty in the case against Miami-based Miami Companions, which is accused of arranging high-priced trysts inside and outside the U.S.
Court filings describe Swaso as the former manager of international call centers in Panama and Costa Rica. Authorities say she, too, became an escort and was known as Sierra Sanchez. She also is a porn actress.

Swaso likely faces 12 months to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty Monday.

Charges are pending against Greg Carr, the former leader of Miami Companions. His ex-wife has pleaded guilty.

Adrian: Michigan man sentenced in 3 killings from 1979
ADRIAN, Mich. (AP) — A 53-year-old Adrian man who pleaded guilty to three 1979 murders and admitted roles in three other killings as part of a plea deal has been sentenced to three life prison terms.

Anthony G. Walker appeared Friday in Lenawee County Circuit Court. He already was imprisoned for a 1996 Wayne County rape conviction.

Authorities in May charged Walker with murder in the shootings of 19-year-old Theresa Carey and 24-year-old Yolanda Madison. Madison’s 10-month-old daughter, Jessica, died when the house was torched.

Walker in December pleaded guilty to killing the women and to the murder-for-hire of Floyd Beatty at his Manchester-area home in 1979.

He wasn’t being charged in the 1975 killing of 24-year-old Arlene Salcedo of Adrian and the 1986 killing of 40-year-old Jackson prison inmate Daniel Staggs.
