WSU Law students place second in moot court competition
Wayne State University Law School students continue to raise the bar in national moot court and mock trial competitions. Second-year students Lauren Kwapis and Michael LaMarra came in second place overall in the John J. Gibbons National Criminal Procedure Moot Court Competition at Seton Hall University in Newark, N.J., April 1-2, 2011.
Kwapis and LaMarra, who were coached by third-year students Anna Heinl and Kenny Koshorek, competed against 39 other teams from ABA accredited schools across the nation. In addition to taking the No. 2 spot overall, the team took second place brief, Kwapis ranked seventh place oralist of the preliminary rounds and LaMarra ranked in the top 25 percent of oralists in the preliminary rounds.
“The Moot Court organization is very proud of the Gibbons team,” said Melissa Slotta, director of Outside Competitions. “Anna and Kenny are not only highly skilled oral advocates, but are also amazing coaches and did an excellent job in preparing Lauren and Michael for the competition. Lauren and Michael are extremely talented legal writers and oralists. They are highly dedicated competitors and their tremendous accomplishments at this competition is a true testament to their skills. We were very proud to have them represent Wayne Law.”

Judges/authors take part in Michigan Notable Books Tour

Cooley Law School presents Michigan Court of Appeals Judge William C. Whitbeck and former Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Lawrence M. Glazer as part of Cooley’s 2011 Michigan Notable Books Tour. Judge Whitbeck has written “To Account for Murder,” a legal/political thriller set in Michigan in the 1940s, and Judge Glazer has written a political biography, “Wounded Warrior: The Rise and Fall of Michigan Governor John Swainson.” The authors will be at Cooley’s Auburn Hills campus at noon on Monday, May 16; the Ann Arbor campus at 5 p.m. on May 16, at the Grand Rapids campus at noon on Wednesday, May 18, and at the Lansing campus at 5 p.m. on May 18. The event is free and open to the public. The Auburn Hills campus is located at 2630 Featherstone, the Ann Arbor campus is at 3475 Plymouth Road, and the Grand Rapids campus is at 111 Commerce Ave. SW. The Lansing presentation will be held in the Strosacker Room of the Brennan Law Library at 330 S. Washington Ave., Lansing.
