Court grits teeth, says joyrider has insurance
GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (AP) — A western Michigan man excluded from his wife's insurance policy still is eligible for benefits in a drunken crash, thanks to a line of court decisions that covers joyriders from the same family.
The state appeals court on Wednesday reluctantly overturned a ruling from an Ottawa County judge and said two Grand Rapids hospitals can be reimbursed for the care of Ryan DeYoung.
DeYoung in 2008 took his wife's Bravada without permission and was in a crash while intoxicated. He was specifically excluded from her insurance.
But the appeals court says a line of cases beginning in 1992 at the Michigan Supreme Court grants coverage to joyriding family members of the insured. The three-judge panel says it doesn't agree but says it must follow legal precedent.

WLAM Foundation holds 4th annual Culinary Challenge

It’s time again for the members of the judiciary to trade their robes for aprons and step up to the culinary challenge. The WLAM Foundation will hold its 4th Annual Culinary Challenge on Tuesday, June 14 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the home of Honorable Kirsten Frank Kelly, Michigan Court of Appeals, 798 Balfour, Grosse Pointe Park. It is for a charity event unlike any other. All profits will be donated to WLAM Foundation Scholarship Fund, Alternatives for Girls, and Crossroads for Youth.
At the last three events, judges, magistrates and referees battled it out for the title of “Best Judicial Chef” in two categories of competition: appetizers and desserts. Last year’s awards went to 17th District Court Judge Karen Khalil for her spinach pie and Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Colleen O’Brien for her delicious brownies. More than 30 members of the judiciary attended the event. Judicial chefs can again choose to make an appetizer or dessert.
In addition, a team of lawyers (Grilled by the Hour) will compete against a team of judges (Grilled from the Bench) in a live cook-off at 6 p.m. Justice Diane Hathaway, Judge Kathy Viviano and Judge Cheryl Matthews will be cooking for Grilled from the Bench this year. Jennifer Grieco, Amy Yu and Margaret Tobin are cooking for Grilled by the Hour.

‘Call for Action’ seeks volunteer attorneys
Volunteer attorneys are being sought by WXYZ-TV Channel 7’s Call for Action.
Every Thursday volunteer attorneys come to the Channel 7 offices to answer incoming calls regarding legal matters.  The phones are open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  The attorneys remain anonymous to callers and do not take cases for themselves.  They refer callers to bar associations and give general legal information.
Anyone interested in volunteering should call (248) 827-1108.
