LAD to honor Wayne County Circuit Court judges at ‘Laddys’
Two Wayne County Circuit Court judges, Timothy M. Kenny and Edward Ewell, Jr., will receive Ed Pokorny Pioneer of Justice awards from Legal Aid and Defender Association (LAD) during its inaugural Laddys pro bono service awards ceremony Nov. 3.

Kenny has served on the court since 1996 and currently is the presiding judge of its Criminal  Division. LAD President and CEO Deierdre Weir cited him for his work on the Wayne County Mental Health Court, which “has diverted so many defendants from the usual criminal justice path and guaranteed them the treatment and proper medication they truly need.”

Ewell has served on the court since 2003.  Weir cited him for his “work in the creation and implementation of the Drug Court within Wayne County Circuit Court.”

The Nov. 3 event will begin with a reception at 5:30 p.m. at the A. Albert Taubman Center for Design Services at the College for Creative Studies, 485 W. Milwaukee St.

Tickets for the Laddys awards ceremony are $50 and are tax deductible. Tables of eight are available.

Entrance to the College for Creative Studies is located at the corner of W. Milwaukee Street and Cass Avenue in the former Argonaut Building. Convenient free parking is available adjacent to the college.

Ousted assistant attorney general files lawsuit over discharge
DETROIT (AP) — A former Michigan assistant attorney general is blaming a Detroit-area lawyer for influencing an investigation that led to his ouster.

Andrew Shirvell had a blog that criticized a gay student government president at the University of Michigan. He was fired last year and is being sued in federal court in Detroit for his actions.

Now, Shirvell is suing attorney Deborah Gordon, who is representing U-M student   Chris Armstrong. Shirvell claims Gordon fed information to investigators at the attorney general's office. He also has accused her of defamation.

Gordon says the lawsuit is “crazy.” Shirvell expects the case will be combined with the pending lawsuit filed against him by Armstrong. Shirvell moved to North Babylon, N.Y., after leaving Michigan state government.
