CHEERS FROM THE BAR: A time for reflection

By Stephen D. McGraw

Greetings and Happy Holidays from the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association.

This is a perfect season to set aside time in our busy schedules to reflect upon what we as lawyers have accomplished, to admire the majesty and importance of the law and our profession, and to thank those individuals who have contributed time and energy to this year's successes.

Much has been written about lawyers and their often perceived inability to feel or express gratitude. It is thought that because lawyers spend the better part of their days confronting and resolving problems, it is harder for them to recall the good things that have been accomplished during the year and to focus on the positive.

While it may seem fashionable for political figures, journalists and the public to demonize and criticize lawyers, we shouldn't forget that we have a wide range of responsibilities and duties that are focused on promoting the public good. As a profession, our role in society requires that we carefully guard and protect the public interest, that we promote fairness in all aspects of the law, and that we strive to insure that justice is done.

For the most part we are protectors of the rule of law and the principle, hopefully not just an ideal, that all people should be treated equally before the law and have access to justice no matter who they are or from whence they come.

Our very specific role in the civil and criminal justice systems is just as important. We permit, facilitate and allow for disputes of every magnitude to come to resolution without, in most cases, violence, unfairness, or the abrogation of individual rights. We are instrumental in processes that play a central role in what makes our country civilized.

So what could be more satisfying and gratifying than serving others in the pursuit of justice? We are fortunate to engage in a profession that permits us to enjoy a feeling of accomplishment and indeed gratitude for the privilege of occupying such an important place in society.

In reflecting on the year past, it is essential to think about the folks who played a role in our accomplishments. Few lawyers can be successful without the help of dedicated team members who share the frustrations, stresses, disappointments and very hard work that comes along with the practice of law, caring as much about performing well for the client as we do. Where would we be without them? Recognizing that one's success is dependent on others keeps us appropriately humble, and a well deserved thank you will motivate our colleagues to continue their efforts on the client's behalf.

So while there may be some lawyers who are not content in their jobs, we still have plenty for which to be grateful. Not every person has the opportunity to obtain a high level of education, be entrusted with important matters and play a role in society that is essential and vital to its continued wellness.

Again, Happy Holidays from the DMBA.
