Box of IDs, cash linked to Sept. 11 attacks
HASTINGS, Mich. (AP) — A box of dusty and damaged identification cards for the World Trade Center, business cards and cash that may have been taken following the Sept. 11 attacks has turned up in Michigan, police said.
The new owner of Smokey Mountain Tobacco in Hastings found the box at the business and gave it to police in June, The Grand Rapids Press reported. The items haven’t been linked to anyone killed in the attacks, but Hastings police Chief Jerry Sarver says they may have been sold online.
It appears the IDs and money “were collected by looters following the 9/11 incident and sold to the highest bidder on the Internet,” Sarver said.
Some of the identification cards gave “One World Trade Center” as an address. Businesses listed include Blue Cross Blue Shield and Cantor Fitzgerald. Some of the items found in the box also indicated they were from the FBI and the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, police said.
The cash is mostly intact one-dollar bills and an assortment of larger half-bills, Sarver said.
Word of the find was reported Tuesday, the 11th anniversary of the attacks. The items are considered stolen, the chief said, and won’t be released until their ownership is determined. Police in Hastings, located about 30 miles southeast of Grand Rapids, continue to investigate the find.

Snyder, Bing announce Belle Isle 30-year lease

DETROIT (AP) — The state would manage Belle Isle Park in Detroit under the terms of a 30-year lease agreement.
The announcement was made Wednesday by Gov. Rick Snyder and Detroit Mayor Dave Bing. The agreement requires the approval of the Detroit City Council.
Proposals for a Michigan takeover of the under-maintained 985-acre park have met fierce opposition from some local officials who call it a state power grab.
But in a statement, Snyder says the deal “provides needed financial relief to Detroit without it relinquishing ownership” and “brings long overdue restoration and enhancements to the park.”
No rent would be paid for the lease with operation, maintenance and improvement projects considered compensation.
The state Department of Transportation would assume responsibility for roads and bridges on Belle Isle.
