On Sunday, Sept. 30, The 313 Project hosted its 10th monthly service event, “Motion to Makeover,” at Southwest Detroit’s Romanowski Park. Over 30 volunteers, including attorneys, law students, and community and family members came together to work on several beautification tasks in and around the park. The projects included: Applying water-resistant varnish to eleven picnic tables; removing graffiti from the picnic area, play structure and signage; hanging basketball nets and retouching the park playscape; cutting away invasive plants around six abandoned houses (previously boarded up at The 313 Project’s July service event); weeding, mulching, and planting strawberries and herbs at the park’s Greening of Detroit urban garden; and completing a trash-sweep of the 26 acre park.

A lunch of cider, apples, and pizza was provided courtesy of the the Young Lawyers Section (YLS) of the State Bar of Michigan, a co-sponsor of the event. Attorneys and YLS Board Members Mark Jane (Of Counsel for Stevenson Keppelman Associates) and Kara Hart-Negrich (Attorney at the Michigan State Housing Development Authority) volunteered alongside The 313 Project members to renovate the park.

The 313 Project’s October “Motion to Makeover” involves volunteering at a community Halloween Fall Festival hosted by Detroit Southwest Pride on Sunday, Oct. 20 at Boyer Park from 2 to 6 p.m. Volunteers will oversee children’s craft stations and games. Donations including pumpkins, juice boxes, and Halloween candy are also appreciated. Email The 313 Project at the313project@gmail.com to sign up or for more information.

The 313 Project began in 2009 as a coalition of three culturally diverse student groups at Wayne State University Law School — the Hispanic Law Student Association (HLSA), the Black Law Student Association (BLSA), & the Asian Pacific American Law Student Association (APALSA).  In 2011, The 313 Project transitioned from a student group to a nonprofit in order to continue the organization’s goals of revitalization, service, and mentorship in Detroit.
