Attorney’s book on Obama receives NAACP Image Award nomination

Detroit attorney Gregory J. Reed’s collection of children’s letters to President Obama and the president’s responses has been nominated for a NAACP Image Award. “Obama Talks Back: Global Lessons - A Dialogue with America’s Young Leaders” was nominated in the category of Best Literary Work - Youth/Teens. Reed compiled the collection over a span of three years. Reed earned his law degree at Wayne State University and is the author of 16 books, including the multi-award winning book “Dear Mrs. Parks: A Dialogue with Today’s Youth” and the exhibit entitled, “Dear Mr. Mandela ... Dear Mrs. Parks: Children’s Letters, Global Lessons,” presented in South Africa and at Michigan State University.

The NAACP Image Awards celebrate the accomplishments of people of color in the fields of television, music, literature and film and also honors individuals or groups who promote social justice through creative endeavors.

Winners will be announced during a two-hour TV special Friday, Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. on NBC.

Memorial to be held Jan. 6 for attorney George Allen Hilborn

On Dec. 20, 2012, George Allen Hilborn of Birmingham, Mich., passed away.  He was 77. 

Hilborn was the regional manager for in-house counsel at Michigan Mutual Liability; a staff attorney in the product liability section of Ford Motor Company’s Office of General Counsel; and in private practice since 1981, including the last nineteen years as a partner at Hilborn & Hilborn PC.  He was a member of the State Bar of Michigan; Oakland County Bar Association; the Michigan Association for Justice; and the American Association for Justice. 

A memorial is being held on Sunday, Jan. 6, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at A.J. Desmond Funeral Home, 32515 Woodward Avenue in Royal Oak; and funeral on Monday, Jan. 7, at First United Methodist Church, 1589 West Maple Road in Birmingham, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
