Stowers named local association's 'Pro Bono Attorney of Year'

Rhonda R. Stowers, an attorney in the Flint office of Plunkett Cooney, one of the Midwest’s oldest and largest law firms, was recently named the Pro Bono Attorney of the Year by Legal Services of Eastern Michigan through the Genesee County Bar Association (GCBA).

“We are all extremely proud of Rhonda for her service to the GCBA,” said Plunkett Cooney’s President and CEO, Henry B. Cooney. “Rhonda has taken to heart the duty of all attorneys to give back some of their time and talents to their communities. She has truly made a difference for residents in the Flint community.”

Stowers received the Pro Bono Attorney of the Year Award at the GCBA membership luncheon on Monday, May 20, at the Flint Golf Club.

According to Legal Services of Eastern Michigan, Stowers was selected for this award based on her continued efforts as a volunteer at its legal aid clinic. Each month she works three to four hours to meet with individuals from the Flint community who have met the organization’s financial hardship criteria. Stowers assists them with a variety of legal issues, including driver’s license restoration, guardianships, adoptions, estates, landlord/tenant disputes, lawsuits and contracts, among other issues.

A member of Plunkett Cooney’s Governmental Law and Title Insurance Law practice groups, Stowers focuses her practice in the areas of general litigation, governmental law and title insurance law. She defends numerous premises liability, employment law, product liability and general litigation cases on behalf of churches, employers, landlords, manufacturers and retailers.

Stowers also represents homeowners, lenders and mortgagors in real estate litigation, focusing on title claim-related issues such as vesting, title-clearing and access, as well as boundary disputes.
Stowers is a member of the Genesee County Bar Association, the State Bar of Michigan, Michigan Defense Trial Counsel and DRI - The Voice of the Defense Bar.

Stowers received her law degree from the University of Michigan Law School in 2001 and her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan - Flint Honors Program in 1998.

Plunkett Cooney, which is celebrating its centennial anniversary this year, employs 150 attorneys in nine Michigan cities, Columbus, Ohio and Indianapolis, Indiana. The firm, which provides a range of transactional and litigation services, has achieved the highest rating (AV) awarded by Martindale-Hubbell and is listed among the U.S. News - Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” in 2013.
