Kent County judge running for seat on Michigan high court

A Grand Rapids-area judge is seeking the Republican Party's nomination to run for the Michigan Supreme Court.

Kent County Circuit Judge James Redford will seek the remaining slot on the party's slate of three candidates. Republicans will choose their nominees at a summer convention before the November election.

One Democratic-nominated justice is retiring and two conservative justices are expected to run again. Supreme Court candidates' partisan affiliations aren't listed on the statewide ballot, though they are nominated by political parties.

Redford was elected to the bench in 2002 after serving as a federal prosecutor and working in private practice. He's also a veteran of the Navy Judge Advocate General's Corps, or JAG.

He lives in East Grand Rapids with his wife and has three children. He announced his candidacy Tuesday.
