Appeals court rules helpful airport guard can get jobless pay

ROMULUS, Mich. (AP) — An airport security guard fired for using a computer to help a traveler can collect unemployment benefits.

The Michigan appeals court says there was nothing sinister about Carnice Hodge helping a traveler with flight information at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, even if her employer had a policy against using certain equipment.
U.S. Security Associates has opposed unemployment benefits for Hodge, saying she’s not entitled because she was fired for violating rules in 2011.
The Michigan Compensation Appellate Commission agreed with the company, but a Wayne County judge reversed the decision. The appeals court affirmed Judge Robert Ziolkowski’s ruling in an opinion released Wednesday.

Mike, Marian Ilitch give $8.5M to Wayne State

DETROIT (AP) — An $8.5 million gift from Mike and Marian Ilitch to Wayne State University will be used to support research and development in surgical technologies.

The school says Wednesday that the gift will create the Ilitch Chair for Surgical Innovation in Wayne State’s Department of Surgery, which will be renamed after the couple.

The Ilitches founded Little Caesars pizza in 1959.

Mike Ilitch owns Major League Baseball’s Detroit Tigers and the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings. He says the gift to Wayne State is “an investment in the future of health care that will support a great educational institution and benefit the people of Detroit, the state of Michigan and beyond.”

The surgery department’s current work focuses on surgery simulation, medical devices, advanced data analytics and biologic therapies for cancer.

Nominations open for Child Welfare Awards

The Foster Care Review Board (FCRB) is seeking nominations for its annual Child Welfare Awards, which honor judges, lawyers, foster care workers and foster parents for exemplary service to children in Michigan’s foster care system.
Categories include “Jurist of the Year” (judges and referees), “Foster Care Worker of the Year,” “LGAL of the Year” (lawyer-guardian ad litem), “Foster Parent of the Year,” and “Parent Attorney of the Year.”

All nominees will receive a congratulatory letter from the Foster Care Review Board informing them of their nomination and thanking them for their service.
The nomination deadline is September 6, and award recipients will be recognized at the FCRB annual training conference on November 6 in Dearborn.

For more than 30 years, the FCRB has provided a third-party review of the foster care system. The program is administered by the State Court Administrative Office, the administrative agency of the Michigan Supreme Court, and is comprised of citizen volunteers who serve on one of 30 local review boards throughout the state.
