On Scotland

Thomas D. Grant (left), an international law expert at the University of Cambridge in England, presented “International Law and the Independence of Scotland” on Thursday, Sept. 4, at Wayne State University Law School. On hand to welcome Grant to Wayne Law was Prof. Gregory Fox (right), director of the Program for International Legal Studies which sponsored the free lecture. A referendum vote in Scotland on Thursday, Sept. 18, will ask that nation’s voters: “Should Scotland be an independent country?” The vote could dramatically change the shape of the United Kingdom. Since 1997, Scotland has had its own parliament and control over justice, education, and health; but London still controls Scotland’s energy, foreign relations, and military defense.  The referendum question has raised many hotly disputed legal issues, including who would get access to North Sea oil.  Grant discussed those issues during the lecture. He is a research fellow of the Cambridge’s Wolfson College and a senior associate of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law. This past year, he has been the Edward Teller National Fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution.  Grant is an advisor to legal teams in cases before the International Court of Justice, general editor and co-founder of the Journal of International Dispute Settlement, and foreign corresponding editor on international legal materials for the American Society of International Law.
