RESTORE to host event on Aug. 17

A fund-raiser to support The RESTORE Foundation will feature a musical accent on Monday, Aug. 17 at Steven Lelli’s Inn on the Green in Farmington Hills.

The event will run from 5:30-8:30 p.m. and will feature the music of Amy Winehouse and Whitney Houston, sung by Rachel Stamler-Jonas and Rosemarie Wilson, respectively.

“Mark your calendar today to support the foundation’s work on behalf of Oakland County’s drug courts and its collaborative efforts to save the lives and futures of young adults,” said retired Oakland Circuit Court Judge Edward Sosnick, president of The RESTORE Foundation.

The foundation provides private financial support for the drug court program, which combines treatment with accountability in a collaborative approach to reduce recidivism in drug-related activity.

The restaurant is located at 27925 Golf Pointe Blvd. in Farmington Hills, near 12 Mile Road just west of Halsted.

Authorities say Man  smuggled guns from U.S. to Lebanon

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say a 54-year-old western Michigan man used his import-export business to smuggle handguns from the U.S. to his native Lebanon.

A criminal complaint in U.S. District Court says Gilbert Oscar Elian of Grand Rapids bought dozens of handguns from 2012-2014 at retail outlets in the Grand Rapids area, drawing attention from federal authorities.

Homeland Security Investigations says Elian exported or tried to export about 18 shipments since 2004, mostly recently in March. Federal investigators say that they found handguns hidden in shipments of auto parts from his business Prestige Imports.

WOOD-TV reports the naturalized U.S. citizen was in court Tuesday in Grand Rapids and is in custody ahead of a Friday detention hearing.

Park along Detroit River hosts new spot for watching birds

DETROIT (AP) — Groups involved in creating a new place for watching birds along the Detroit River said Wednesday that they hope it will help reconnect people with the waterway and inspire a new generation of conservationists.

The urban birding spot is at Gabriel Richard Park, which is located along the Detroit RiverWalk and near the MacArthur Bridge to Belle Isle. It features four wildlife spotting scopes and an interpretive panel identifying common birds that can be seen in the area.

The spot is dedicated in memory of Georgia Reid, an avid birder and former board member of the Detroit Audubon Society, as well as David Campbell, longtime president of The McGregor Fund and a former member of the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy's board.

The Detroit River region is at the intersection of the Atlantic and Mississippi flyways, making it a prime area for bird watching. More than 300 species of birds live in or regularly migrate through the area, including 30 species of waterfowl, 17 species of raptors, 31 species of shorebirds and 160 species of songbirds.
