Firm 'pools resources' for charity

Attorneys and family members of Dawda, Mann, Mulcahy & Sadler, PLC just completed a very successful swim-a-thon, raising money for Oakland Family Services and other charitable organizations. The law firm is celebrating their 20th anniversary with a "Year of Giving Back."

The law firm chose several organizations to support during this year, underwriting projects, attending and participating in programs and making outright contributions.

One of the projects that the firm chose to support was Oakland Family Service's Backpacks for Kids, a program Oakland Family had not been able to fund this year. Backpacks for Kids supplies 100 backpacks, filled with school supplies, for at-risk children throughout Oakland County. The law firm agreed not only to purchase the supplies for the backpacks, but also to stuff all of the backpacks so that they could be distributed prior to the opening days of school.

Dawda Mann attorney Dan Israel suggested a swimathon where staff members of the firm and their family could participate through swimming or donating to a worthy cause.

It's not surprising that Dan Israel would choose to raise money in the pool. Israel is not only a respected lawyer; he is also recognized as a master swimmer. Dan's swimming career began at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, where he was a three-time all-American swimmer. Dan then swam at Brown University, where he captained the swim team, was recognized as the Most Valuable Player of the Swim Team and was First Team Ivy League seven times while at Brown. Israel also was a medalist at the Maccabiah games in Israel and was the 2009 Masters' National Champion in 1000 meter freestyle.

Israel and fellow Dawda Mann attorney Dana Glencer swam at the Beachwood Recreation Association in Troy along with their kids and raised several thousand dollars not only for the Backpack for Kids project, but for the other non-profits that Dawda Mann is supporting this year.

The recipients of Dawda Mann's Year of Giving include: Oakland Family Services, Cass Community Social Services, Karmanos Cancer Institute, Forgotten Harvest, and Down Syndrome Guild of Southeast Michigan. Money raised through this swimathon will specifically fund the OFS Backpacks for Kids, and the additional money left over will be divided among the firm's selected charities for the year.
