The 12th annual Mark Weiss Day at Comerica Park on Friday, Aug. 7, raised more than $6,000 for scholarships at Wayne State University Law School. About 95 people attended a pre-game picnic and saw the Detroit Tigers play the Boston Red Sox at the event to benefit the Mark Weiss Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund provides scholarships for students and recent graduates who share the same dream as Weiss – a commitment to provide legal aid to the underserved in the community.

More than 250 lawyers, judges, friends and family members have contributed to the memorial fund, which has surpassed its original goal of $250,000.

The scholarship was established as a joint project of Wayne Law and the Michigan Association for Justice, formerly known as the Michigan Trial Lawyers Association.
Weiss, who graduated from Wayne Law in 1969, devoted his skills to fighting for the rights of the poor and powerless and protecting the civil rights of all litigants. He died in 2003.
To date, 43 scholarships have been awarded to Wayne Law students in memory of Weiss.
