Mental Health Court celebrates 12 grads

Wayne County’s Third Circuit Court held a ceremony to honor 12 graduates who successfully completed its Mental Health Court program requirements.

Third Circuit Court Mental Health Court Presiding Judge Timothy M. Kenny led the ceremony.

The court has seen 106 graduates since the launch of its Mental Health Court program in 2009.  The program consists of intensive supervision by the court staff and teams, and requires that participants undergo treatment through local community mental health service providers, and drug testing when appropriate, among other steps.

Problem-solving courts are non-traditional courts that focus on nonviolent offenders whose underlying medical and social problems have contributed to recurring contacts with the criminal justice system. Participants in Michigan drug and mental health courts are two times less likely to commit another offense after two years. More information about how these specialty courts are solving problems and saving lives can be found here: www.courts.mi.gov/pscreport.

The graduation coincides with the observance of National Recovery Month, which is held every September to educate Americans that substance use treatment and mental health services can enable those with a mental and/or substance use disorder to live a healthy and rewarding life.

Free legal help for child support issues

The Salvation Army William Booth Legal Aid Clinic is coordinating with Wayne County Friend of the Court to conduct a child support help program on Saturday, Oct. 22, in the “Friends Auditorium” of the Detroit Public Library, 5201 Woodward Ave., from 1–4 p.m.

There will be a brief informational session on being proactive with child support and paternity issues. Participants will then have the opportunity to consult one-on-one with volunteer family law attorneys. These attorneys will answer questions on child support, parenting time, and custody issues and help participants fill out legal forms.

Child support professionals will be on site to register participants on the MiChildSupport website, and there will be staff dedicated to assisting the public with completing “Michigan State Discharge of Arrearage” packets.

This program is one in a series of free child support help programs supported by community service agencies including Wayne County Head Start, JVS Jewish Vocational Service, Detroit Head Start Fatherhood Initiative, Wayne County Friend of the Court, Abundant Children and Family Services Agency, Wayne County Mediation Center, Wayne County Jury Services, Young Fathers Standing United, Family Alliance for Change, and Wayne County Community College District.
