Detroit land bank, state officials settle demolition probe

DETROIT (AP) — Detroit's land bank will pay Michigan housing officials $5 million as part of a settlement over improper demolition invoices improperly submitted for repayment as part of the city's demolition program.

The Michigan State Housing Development Authority announcement the agreement Thursday between the Michigan Homeowner Assistance Nonprofit Housing Corp., which was created to administer federal demolition funds, and the Detroit Land Bank Authority.

The city of Detroit says, however, that as part of the agreement the MHA will make $5 million available to fund more Detroit demolitions.

The demolition program has been under scrutiny by state and federal agencies. In January, Detroit Mayor Duggan said the city had agreed to repay $1.3 million but seek a resolution to other disputes. The $5 million announced Thursday is in addition to that repayment.

Ex-Spartan football  player ordered to trial

MASON, Mich. (AP) — Former Michigan State football player Auston Robertson has been ordered to trial on sexual assault charges.

A 20-year-old woman testified Thursday that Robertson raped her at her off-campus apartment in April. The defensive end from Fort Wayne, Indiana, was kicked off the team after he was charged.
The woman said her boyfriend, a football player, told a coach, who notified police.

Defense attorney David Rosenberg told the Lansing State Journal that it's a "weak case." The 19-year-old Robertson next hopes to play football at a Mississippi community college.

Three other former players face sexual assault charges in an unrelated case. They also were kicked off the football team.

Man arrested after 3-year-old finds gun, fatally shoots self

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Police say they've arrested a man after a 3-year-old boy found a loaded gun outside a suburban Detroit apartment complex and fatally shot himself.

Police say they believe the 29-year-old Mount Clemens man dropped the weapon from his pocket outside an apartment complex in Clinton Township and the child, identified as Cameron Dillard, picked it up. Police say the gun discharged, shooting the boy in the chest.

The child's parents took him to a hospital, where he died after the Tuesday shooting. Police say someone took the gun from the scene and they're trying to find it.

Police say the man was found Tuesday night in Detroit and is on parole for a weapons charge.
