Seminar addresses financial concerns of solo, small firm lawyers


The Oakland County Bar Association continues its Law Practice Management Series with a Tuesday, Nov. 28 seminar covering law firm finances.

Money Matters will explore common financial concerns that must be addressed in order to run a profitable and ethical law practice. Martha Denning Moore, professor and auxiliary dean at Western Michigan University Thomas Cooley Law School, and Brenda M. Orlando, C.P.A., A.B.V., C.F.F., will cover topics including accounting software, proper billing, and avoiding pitfalls with IOLTA accounts. The seminar takes place at the OCBA offices on November 28 at 6 p.m.

The Law Practice Management seminars are $30 each for OCBA attorney members and $40 for non-members. New lawyers, students and paralegals can enroll for $25 per seminar. Register online at www.ocba.org/events. Pre-registration is recommended since seating is limited; however, walk-ins are welcome.

The OCBA offices are located at 1760 South Telegraph Road, Suite 100, Bloomfield Hills.

 

Wayne Law again  recognized as a Best Value Law School


For the fourth consecutive year, Wayne State University Law School has been recognized as a Best Value Law School by The National Jurist and its sister publication, prelaw magazine.

Of the 60 law schools on the list, Wayne Law was the only Michigan law school recognized. The ranking is “designed to recognize the law schools where graduates have excellent chances of passing the bar and getting a legal job without taking on a ton of debt,” according to The National Jurist.

Criteria for selection includes percentage of graduates who pass the bar exam, employment rate, tuition cost, cost of living and average student debt accumulation. Employment rate is given the greatest weight.
preLaw magazine also recognized Wayne Law among the top law schools in the category of Business, Banking and Corporate Law.

 

MAJ’s Annual Workers’ Compensation/Social Security Seminar
 

The Michigan Association for Justice will host a Workers’ Compensation/Social Security Seminar from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19 at Four Points by Sheraton-Novi, 27000 S. Karevich Dr. in Novi. Topics to be covered include: Workers’ Compensation Residual Wage Earning Capacity Decisions; Legislative Update; Workers’ Compensation and Social Security Disability State of the Law; Issues on Pain Management; How National Issues Impact Your Practice; Workers’ Compensation Tips; Federal Social Security Disability Appeals; and Issues on Neurosurgery and Orthopedic Surgery. Co-moderators of the seminar are William Watkinson, Bernstein & Bernstein PC, Lathrup Village; Jeffrey Kaufman, Alex Berman, PC, Farmington Hills; and Sean Shearer, Charters, Tyler & Zack, P.C., Troy.
