William Booth Legal Aid Clinic ‘Walk for Justice’ set April 21st

The William Booth Legal Aid Clinic, a nonprofit organization based in Detroit, hopes draw more than 500 walkers and raise in excess of $70,000 at the 6th Annual “Walk for Justice” Saturday, April 21 at the Detroit Zoo starting at 8 a.m.
In 2013, the first year the “Walk for Justice” was held, there were 271 participants and approximately $15,000 was raised. Last year, the totals increased substantially with 466 registered walkers and more than $62,000 raised. This year, the William Booth Legal Aid Clinic Executive Director Amy Roemer is hoping for record numbers, in terms of both walkers and money contributed.

“The “Walk for Justice” represents about 25 percent of our annual budget,” Roemer said. “The money collected is used to provide legal services in the areas that affect the most vulnerable members of our society. The clinic also assists with legal issues pertaining to U.S. military veterans within the community.”

Roemer adds that the Salvation Army, with which the William Booth Legal Aid Clinic is affiliated, offers some financial assistance, but the clinic is responsible for raising, through private donations, whatever additional funds are needed to carryout its humanitarian mission.

Admission to the “Walk for Justice” is $20 for law students, while the cost for others is $35 in advance and $40 on the day of the walk. Children will be admitted free of charge. The price of admission includes zoo entry, parking, T-shirt and refreshments. A silent auction, family activities and door prizes add to the day’s excitement and enjoyment.

Sponsors for the event include: WWJ Radio (950 AM); Fox 2 Detroit; Durr Systems Inc.; McNeeley Law Group, P.C.; Towing & Equipment Magazine; Records Deposition Service; Roger & Arlene Smith; University of Detroit Mercy School of Law; Grech Law Firm, PLLC; Bush, Seyferth & Paig, PLLC; Barton Malow Foundation; Galco Industrial Electronics; McNaughton-McKay Electric; Sterling Bank & Trust; Georgetown Dermatology; Marshall E. Man accused of raping Michigan girl now charged in her death

DETROIT (AP) — A man charged with sexually assaulting a 16-year-old Michigan girl is now accused of killing her before she was expected to testify in the rape case.

Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker said Wednesday that two men are facing charges connected to the death of Mujey Dumbuya. Her partially clothed body was found in January about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from her Grand Rapids home.

The accused rapist, Quinn James, is charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping and other crimes. He’s accused of sexually assaulting Mujey last summer and then killing her while he was free on bond in the case.

James’ co-defendant, Gerald Bennett, is charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

Investigators have alleged the men plotted to kill the teenager, but few details have been released.
