Law firm donates 500 smoke alarms to Detroit Fire Department

Farmington Hills-based Fabian, Sklar, King & Liss P.C., a law firm specializing in representing victims of fires and explosions, including businesses and homeowners in property damage disputes with insurers, donated 500 10-year, sealed lithium battery-operated smoke alarms to the Detroit Fire Department (DFD) in honor of Fire Prevention Week-which took place Oct. 7 - 13. This is the ninth consecutive year Fabian, Sklar, King & Liss has supplied the DFD with these life-saving tools - bringing their cumulative total of smoke alarms donated to the DFD to 4,500. The smoke alarms are then distributed throughout the Detroit community upon request and installed free of charge by members of the Detroit Fire Department, saving countless lives as a result. "When a fire breaks out, you don't always have much time to safely escape. One second can make all the difference, which makes having a properly functioning smoke alarm so important," said Stuart Sklar, shareholder of Fabian, Sklar, King & Liss. "We're committed to providing these smoke alarms to Detroit residents free of charge every year because we know how valuable they are. We've seen hundreds of fire injury and explosion cases and these devices can be life-saving." The 2018 National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Prevention Week theme was "Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware fire can happen anywhere." While this message applies to any location, NFPA is committed to educating the public specifically on home fire safety. The majority of U.S. fire deaths (four out of five) occur at home each year. This places critical importance on ensuring working smoke alarms are installed in homes and changed every 10 years. If the alarm is not a sealed 10-year model, residents should change the batteries at least every six months. To request the installation of a smoke detector, citizens can contact the Detroit Fire Department at (313) 596-2900. Published: Wed, Oct 17, 2018
