Noted philanthropists receive coveted award

On October 11, the State Bar of Michigan’s Arts, Communications, Entertainment and Sports (ACES) Section honored Stuart and Maxine Frankel with the prestigious “John Hensel Award.”

This year’s presentation and reception, held at Cranbrook Art Museum, was attended by nearly 100 attorneys, friends and family of the Frankels. The award recognized the couple for their leadership and philanthropy in the arts community, both in Michigan and nationally.

The Frankels are the founders of the Maxine and Stuart Foundation for Art, and significant supporters of the Cranbrook Academy of Art, the University of Michigan Musical Society, and the University of Michigan Art Museum.

“ACES is proud to honor the Frankels, and to recognize their remarkable contribution to arts education and the arts,” said Lawrence R. Jordan, chairperson emeritus of ACES, and partner at Jaffe Raitt Heuer & Weiss.

The award is given annually to a member of the State Bar of Michigan who has made a notable contribution to arts, communications, sports or entertainment in Michigan.

An alumnus of Wayne State University Law School, Stuart Frankel is the owner of the Stuart Frankel Development Co. in Troy.

With her husband, Maxine Frankel is a longtime supporter of the Cranbrook Academy of Art. She joined the Academy Board of Governors in 1996, and previously served as chair of the board.

ACES members frequently represent famous musicians and artists, negotiate television and movie deals, litigate intellectual property disputes, and help safeguard sensitive information online.

In addition, ACES engages practicing attorneys and law students through in-person interactive meetings, and a variety of networking events and seminars throughout the year.
