Golf For Foster Kids Classic tees off Sept. 16 at Fox Hills

The third annual “Fore” The Seventh Generation Golf For Foster Kids Classic will take place Monday, Sept. 16 at The Golden Fox Champion Course at Fox Hills in Plymouth.

Funds raised from the event will be used to support the operations of For The Seventh Generation, a nonprofit, community-based volunteer program established in 2005 that provides non-law-related services to abused and neglected wards of the court. The program serves more than 1,000 Detroit-area foster children and families every year.

“We serve as a clearinghouse to match those willing to volunteer their time, talents or merchandise with those children identified by the juvenile court as needing such assistance,” explained Lorraine Weber, co-founder and chair of the FTSG board of directors.

“The need for such help is great. The court is designed to take care of the basic needs of our children, but sadly, these kids have a lot of other needs that go far beyond the court’s ability to solve. And with its limited resources, the court system can only do so much,” Weber added.

That’s where organizations such as the Wolverine Bar Association, which is hosting and sponsoring the event this year, play an pivotal role in the success of For the Seventh Generation.

“We’re very excited to be co- hosting this event with the Wolverine Bar Association,” Weber said. “Lawyers and judges have been important partners of ours since the very beginning, and we’re looking forward to continuing that partnership with the Detroit legal community going forward.”

Through this innovative program, non-legal service providers such as doctors, dentists and other professionals, as well as retail and service related companies, are asked to donate one item or service per year to one ward of the Wayne County Juvenile Foster Care system. It’s an investment with a big payoff, co-founder Judge Kelly Ramsey of the Third Circuit Court believes.

“I think we must recognize that the actions we take today will have an impact far beyond the current generation,” Judge Ramsey said. “How we deal with our most vulnerable children today will affect their progeny for years to come. We must work for the seventh generation.”

Participation in the Kids Classic includes 18 holes of golf with cart, lunch (including one drink ticket), a silent auction, raffle, awards banquet, complimentary gifts, and team photo.

Also at the event, For The Seventh Generation will present its annual Thrive Award, which honors an organization that significantly contributes to the quality of life for children and families in the Wayne County Child Welfare system. This year’s recipient is Faith Communities Coalition on Foster Care, a growing grassroots collaboration to connect Michigan congregations of all faiths on behalf of the county’s 13,000 children in foster care founded by Rev. Dr. Kate Thoresen.

Registration will open at 9 a.m.; golf will begin with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. The event will continue with the awards banquet, silent auction and raffle at 4 p.m.
