WMU-Cooley to host talk on including convicted felons as jurors

On May 13, at 1 p.m., WMU-Cooley Law School’s Innocence Project and the Career and Professional Development Office will host a virtual discussion with Dr. James Binall, an associate professor of law, criminology and criminal justice at California State University, Long Beach. The event, named after his book “Twenty Million Angry Men: The Case for Including Convicted Felons on Our Jury System,” reveals the flaws inherent in the justifications for felon-juror exclusions, as well as the negative impacts of the practice on jury deliberation and on the reintegration of convicted felons.

During the discussion, Binall will explain the book’s primary thesis, that prospective jurors with a felony history enhance, rather then detract from the jury system.

Binall spent four years in prison for a DUI homicide that took the life of his close friend. While incarcerated, he took the LSAT and was accepted to law school. Once released , he earned his  J.D. and LL.M., and was admitted to the Bar in California. He later went on to earn a Ph.D. in criminology from the University of California, Irvine.
