The Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan’s Violence Against Women Project will present a free, interactive training on understanding the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners Exam/Strangulation Assessment. The training will also cover how to effectively use the SANE in trial.
“Understanding the SANE Exam/Strangulation Assessment and Effectively Using the SANE in Trial” will take place Friday, December 3, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in person (prosecutors only for up to 10) at the PAAM offices, 116 West Ottawa Street in Lansing, and online via Zoom (for up to 15).
As more jurisdictions around the state are utilizing SANE programs, sexual assault nurse examiner testimony is becoming an integral part of adolescent and adult sexual assault cases. This training will focus on understanding medical-forensic examinations and strangulation assessments in the adolescent and adult patient.
The training will also cover qualifying a SANE as an expert, how to effectively use a SANE on direct examination /re-direct and using a SANE exam as corroborating evidence in a case-in-chief. This training will be interactive and include web-based tools such as polls, breakouts, and/or discussion sessions
This training is designed for prosecutors, targeted to prosecutors newer to handling adolescent or adult sexual assault cases or those looking for a refresher. Limited registration space may be available for LE officers that handle CSC/DV case and system based advocates working in prosecutors office. Zoom only for those registrants
The VAWP team at PAAM hopes to provide attendees joining via Zoom with a training experience as close as possible to a live in-person training. This is not a webinar. Attendees are asked to treat this training as if it were a in-person training. Because space is limited, attendees should only register if they can devote the full time allotted to the training.
This training satisfies 6 hours of continuing legal education for purposes of PAAM’s Best Practices Recommendations.
To register for the training either in person or via Zoom, visit www.michiganprosecutor.org and click on “training.”
