Wayne Law students take part in oral competitions and negotiations

Wayne State University Law School second-year students Fatima Dakroub and Andrew Vailliencourt won the Law School’s In-House NFL Contract Negotiation Competition for the second year in a row on Saturday, Nov. 20.

Dakroub and Vailliencourt will advance to Tulane Law School’s Professional Football Negotiation Competition in January and compete against students from across the country.

The teams of Dilan Kama and Samuel Kassab, and Joe Candela and Zachary Revoldt, tied and were named runners-up.

Now in its fourth year, the NFL Contract Negotiation Competition at Wayne Law is an opportunity for students to practice negotiation skills in front of practicing attorneys. Students represent either an NFL player or an NFL team and work to come to an agreement on a contract for their client.

The annual competition is supervised by Assistant Professor (Clinical) Rebecca Robichaud. Student organizers were Lindsey LaForest and David Wakefield. Event judges were Samer Hamade ’19, Jaime Miettinen, Deborah Schneider ’85, and Joe Vernon.

The event was sponsored by Sports Slaw, a podcast about the business of sports with perspectives from sports lawyer Deborah Schneider, and former NFL player Lomas Brown.

Wayne Law students competed also in the fall Mock Trial In-House Competition Friday, Nov. 19. Advancing to the final round were second-year students Darby Jensen and Marissa Voiles for the defense, and Olivia Capizzi and Rita Karana for the prosecution, with Jenson and Voiles winning the competition. Voiles was also named Best Oralist of the competition. Event judges were Assistant Professor (Clinical) Daniel Ellman and Hon. Kameshia D. Gant ’04.
