Online screening, panel discussion looks at ‘Warrior Lawyers’ April 29

An online screening and panel discussion of the documentary “Warrior Lawyers: Defenders of Sacred Justice” will be offered Friday, April 29, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. via Zoom

The film focuses on the stories of Michigan Native American lawyers, tribal judges, and their colleagues who work with Native Nations, their citizens and mainstream institutions to achieve Sacred Justice through “the examination of Tribal Sovereignty...Historical Trauma, Violence Against Indian Women...as well as restorative Justice Practices such as Peacemaking and Healing.”

Panelists will include:

• Audrey Geyer, executive director Visions Detroit, and director and producer of “Warrior Lawyers: Defenders of Sacred Justice”

• Chief Judge Joanne Cook, Native American attorney, and chief appellate judge of the Michigan Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians

• Chief Judge Allie Greenleaf Maldonado, Native American attorney and Chief Judge of the Little Traverse Bands of Odawa Indians of Harbor Springs

Circuit Court judge to address RBA April 25

The Rochester Bar Association will host its next meeting on Monday, April 25, from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Rochester Mills Brewery, 400 Water St. in Rochester.

Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Yasmine Poles will be the guest speaker at the RBA lunch.  Poles was appointed in 2020 by Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to fill the vacancy created when Judge Hala Jarbou stepped down following her appointment to the U.S. District Court, Western District of Michigan.  Prior to her appointment, Poles was general counsel for Success Mortgage Partners Inc. (2017-2020) and operated the Law Offices of Yasmine I. Poles PLLC (2019-2020). She was also an assistant prosecuting attorney for Macomb County from 2005-2017.  Poles earned her law degree from Wayne State University Law School and her BA in Psychology from the University of Michigan.

Lunch attendees will be choosing from a limited menu and should plan to be seated to order by noon, with the speaker starting shortly after introductions.
