MSU Law student recognized for community service

Elizabeth Sachs began law school hoping to integrate her passion for service with her studies.

In January, she was recognized by Michigan State University with a Spartan Volunteer Service Award, acknowledging that she completed over 100 hours of volunteer service to the community between November 2020 and November 2021. She was one of the top four student volunteers at MSU, receiving an additional acknowledgement from President Stanley at the University Outreach and Engagement Awards Ceremony in February for logging nearly 700 service hours in total.

Sachs was raised in a service-oriented household where both parents taught her the impact of giving back.

“My mom is a clinical social worker and now a state legislator, while my father supports communities during environmental disasters by performing disaster relief mitigation services,” Sachs explained, “[volunteering] was just the way my family functioned. It’s as natural as breathing to me.”

Sachs joined MSU College of Law in the fall of 2020, and she brought years of experience in sexual assault and domestic violence advocacy to a new role with the MSU Center for Survivors, where she volunteers regularly as a medical advocate.

She’s also heavily involved within the MSU Law community as the events coordinator for Women’s Law Caucus, secretary of the Family Law Society, chair of the Volunteer Committee of the ACLU, a Moot Court oralist, and a member of the Board of Advocates. She is in the Geoffrey Fieger Trial Practice Institute and worked for a semester in the Civil Rights Clinic at MSU Law.

During the Fall 2021 semester, she also completed a judicial externship in the 30th Circuit Court with Judge Rosemarie Aquilina, who serves as an adjunct professor at the law college.

Sachs is currently a clerk for Grewal Law, PLLC, in Okemos.

Sachs can’t imagine law school without the experiences she’s had as a volunteer, and she credits them for helping her to focus on why she’s chosen this path. “Nothing motivates me more than helping those most in need of services and legal representation,” she said. “I think this makes me a better person, a better lawyer, a better advocate for others, and a more empathetic individual.”
