Gov. appoints new chief legal counsel

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has announced the appointment of Nicholas Bagley as her new Chief Legal Counsel.

Currently, Bagley serves as special counsel to the Governor and formerly was a professor at the University of Michigan Law School with expertise in regulatory and health law. He previously served as special counsel in the governor’s Office of Legal Counsel from March to August 2020.

Bagley, who holds a bachelor’s degree from Yale University and his law degree from New York University, also worked in private practice, argued cases for the Department of Justice before the U.S. Courts of Appeals, and clerked at the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

“Nick Bagley brings a wealth of experience to the executive office and I am confident that he will help us continue putting Michiganders first,” said Governor Whitmer. “Nick was instrumental in helping us keep communities safe during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic in his role as Special Counsel, and we are excited to welcome him back in a permanent capacity as we continue making progress on the kitchen-table issues that matter most to families.”
