She first became known among local civil rights activists after writing an op-ed in the Detroit Free Press condemning ethnic profiling after the September 11, 2001 World Trade Center attacks.

Well wishers will have the opportunity to congratulate Pierce on Thursday, August 18, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Room 1511 of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center in Detroit.
