Wassom elected to MCBF Board

Brian D. Wassom, a partner in Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP's Litigation Department, has been elected to the Macomb County Bar Foundation's (MCBF) Board of Directors. The MCBF is a nonprofit organization that identifies, initiates and supports law-related projects and programs that benefit the community. It exemplifies the Macomb County legal community's 100 years of public service and civic involvement.

In his law practice, Wassom handles major civil litigation in federal and state courts for a diverse range of clients, with a particular emphasis on copyright, trademark, publicity rights, and related intellectual property and media law issues. His copyright experience extends to creative expression, including 3-D digital imagery, software code, architectural designs, music and lyrics, film scripts, books and visual arts. Crain's Detroit Business named one of Wassom's copyright victories as one of the "Top Verdicts and Settlements" of 2006, and his success on appeal broke new ground in copyright law.

Wassom also litigates trademark, trade dress, service mark, dilution and related issues in federal and state courts, as well as in administrative litigation before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board and Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy arbitrations. He recently obtained a permanent injunction, summary judgment and confidential settlement that put an end to a nationwide advertising campaign that infringed on his client's family of service marks.

In the emerging field of publicity rights, Wassom is one of few Michigan attorneys to have litigated multiple cases in this field to conclusion, helping to shape the common law in the process. He also defends the rights of journalists as part of Honigman's Media and Entertainment Law Practice Group and has helped reporters keep sources confidential, obtain access to closed court proceedings, uncover government documents using the Freedom of Information Act and defeat accusations of defamation.

In addition to his volunteer work with the MCBF, Wassom was a director and officer of the Christian Legal Aid of Southeast Michigan and co-founder of Restoration in Southeast Michigan (RISE).

He earned his J.D., magna cum laude, at Case Western Reserve University School of Law and is a member of the Order of Coif. He also holds a B.A. in Political Science and International Studies from Wayne State University.
