William B. Murphy reappointed as Court of Appeals Chief Judge

 The Michigan Supreme Court has announced that Court of Appeals Judge William B. Murphy, who was appointed to  the Court in 1988 and has served as chief judge since November 2009, will continue as chief judge through 2014.


As chief judge, Murphy administers internal operations including finances, case management, and work  assignments. “Leadership, vision, and administrative skills are essential, and Chief Judge Murphy has all those  qualities, plus innovative ideas about improving the courts,” said Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert  P. Young, Jr. 

Under Murphy’s guidance, the Court of Appeals was recently named a leader in automation of court  business practices by the National Center for State Courts. 
 
Judge Murphy has served and continues to serve on numerous civic and bar related organizations; he is a former chair of the Judicial Tenure Commission. He is an adjunct professor at Thomas M. Cooley Law
School, was formerly an adjunct at Michigan State University College of Law, and serves on the Executive Committee of the Council of Chief Judges of the State Courts  of Appeal. 

The chief judge received his bachelor's degree from Michigan State University and his law degree from Wayne State University, cum laude. Before he was appointed to the Court of Appeals, Judge Murphy was in private practice, specializing in litigation, in Grand Rapids. He was also a member of the East Grand Rapids City Commission and a law clerk for the Michigan Court of Appeals.

Judge Murphy is a lecturer for the Michigan Judicial Institute, various bar associations, and continuing legal education programs.

The Michigan Supreme Court also appointed him a member of the Judicial Executive Committee and Strategic Planning Committee for the Michigan Justice Project.

Judge Murphy served as Chief Judge Pro Tem from 1992-96. His current COA term expires Jan., 2019.
