Warner Norcross partner John Bursch elected to American Academy of Appellate Lawyers

John J. Bursch, a partner with the law firm Warner Norcross & Judd LLP, has been elected to the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers, or AAAL.

Membership in the AAAL is limited to 500 elected members and reserved for appellate advocates who have demonstrated the highest skill level and integrity.  They must also have at least 15 years of appellate experience. Only current fellows of the AAAL can make nominations to the organization and nominees must be elected to the fellowship by the board of directors.

Bursch is the only Michigan attorney to be elected to AAAL this year and only the seventh attorney in Michigan elected.

Bursch concentrates his practice in appellate advocacy and co-chairs the firm’s Appellate and Supreme Court Practice.  He has argued nine cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, 18 cases before the Michigan Supreme Court, and dozens of additional cases in the Michigan Court of Appeals and federal and state appellate courts. He is certified as an appellate specialist by the American Institute of Appellate Practice.

Bursch is a six-time winner of the Distinguished Brief Award for Michigan Supreme Court briefing from the Thomas M. Cooley Law Review, and he is a three-time winner of the National Asso-
ciation of Attorneys General Best Brief Award for U.S. Supreme Court briefing, among other honors. Bursch is also a past chair of the American Bar Association’s Council of Appellate Lawyers.
Bursch holds two bachelor’s degrees from Western Michigan University summa cum laude and his J.D. magna cum laude from University of Minnesota Law School.
