 WBA?awards Margrette A. Taylor Distinguished Young Lawyer Award

The Wolverine Bar Association announced last week that Sharika Robinson is this year’s recipient of the Margrette A. Taylor Distinguished Young Lawyer Award.

The award is named in honor of Margrette A. Taylor, who was a dedicated member of the WBA’s Board of Directors when she passed away in 2000. Taylor was committed to serving the community and her reputation for excellence was unsurpassed. The WBA pays tribute to her spirit and dedication by recognizing another committed young lawyer who exemplifies similar, selfless service for the betterment of others.
 
Robinson is a federal law clerk for the Honorable Victoria A. Roberts of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Once a single mother of four, Robinson graduated first in her class in May 2012 from North Carolina Central University School of Law. She is currently piloting a parent group, Minority Parent Student Support Group, which is tailored to ensuring that all children are treated equally. Additionally, Robinson is co-piloting the African-American Parent and Student Coalition, a group of minority parents who are working to eliminate the academic achievement gap. For the past two years, Robinson has served on the WBA’s Judicial Externship Committee which pairs minority students with federal judges every summer.

“Sharika Robinson’s dedication to ensuring equal access to educational opportunities for our children is remarkable,” said Ronda Tate, WBA president. “She truly embodies the spirit of Margrette Taylor and is extremely deserving of this award. The WBA is very proud to honor Sharika and we look forward to her future contributions to society.”

Robinson accepted the award at the WBA’s President’s Reception on June 27 in Detroit.
 

Firm hosts stress management event  with Kids Kicking Cancer

Jaffe Raitt Heuer & Weiss, in partnership with Kids Kicking Cancer, recently hosted a stress management seminar for women involved with The Empowerment Plan. 
 
Along with Jaffe attorneys, Kids Kicking Cancer Founder Rabbi Elimelech Goldberg and children in the program visited with women at The Empowerment Plan and taught breathing and relaxation techniques used in the Kids Kicking Cancer program, which help manage pain and deal with stress. The event, which was organized by Jaffe’s Not-For-Profit Practice Group, connected two of metro Detroit’s most impactful nonprofits.

“Kids Kicking Cancer and The Empowerment Plan bring priceless value to many lives in metro Detroit,” said Jennifer Oertel, partner at Jaffe Raitt Heuer & Weiss and Not-For-Profit Practice Group leader.
