John D. Pirich, a partner at Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP, has been named one of 30 “Leaders in the Law” for 2015 by Michigan Lawyers Weekly. An editorial panel selected the honorees based on criteria that included the ability to achieve success, display strength of character, show passion for the law and the profession, and solve problems while reflecting great integrity.
Pirich, located in Honigman’s Lansing office, was influential in gaining support of the governor and the legislature to create the methodology for the state to financially participate in the Grand Bargain, a significant catalyst in bringing the Detroit bankruptcy to resolution. It required passage of an 11-bill package that allowed for the state’s contribution of $350 million, which received bi-partisan support.
In his legal practice, Pirich represents clients in governmental relations, which includes appearing before various legislative committees, interacting with legislative staff, and participating in legislative initiatives for trade associations and institutional clients. He is also an experienced litigator who regularly argues matters at the trial and appellate levels in both state and federal courts, focusing on election law, campaign finance and other politically related activities. As a former Assistant Attorney General for the State of Michigan, Pirich has substantial insurance regulatory, coverage dispute, litigation and negotiation experience, as well as extensive environmental and general administrative law experience.
He has been recognized by The Best Lawyers in America since 1995 and by Michigan Super Lawyers since 2007. He is an adjunct professor at Michigan State University College of Law and director of the school’s Trial Advocacy Institute.
Pirich, who earned a J.D. from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law and a B.A. from the University of Michigan, is a tireless community volunteer and has served on boards for the Wharton Center for the Performing Arts, the Sparrow Hospital Foundation and the State Volunteers of America, to name just a few.
