Judges show support for legal aid clinic

Among those who participated in The Salvation Army William Booth Legal Aid Clinic’s Walk for Justice held recently at the Detroit Zoo were members of the local judiciary, including (front row, left to right) Wayne County Judges Oiana Lillard, Maria Oxholm and Lisa Neilson; (middle row) Wayne County Judges Lynne Pierce, Connie Kelly and Charlene Elder and retired Oakland County Judge Fred Mester; along with (back row) Wayne County Judge Timothy Kenny, Oakland County Judge Denise Langford Morris and Wayne County Chief Judge Robert J. Colombo Jr.

Nearly 400 walkers recently attended The Salvation Army William Booth Legal Aid Clinic’s (WBLAC) second annual Walk for Justice at the Detroit Zoo.

Several former clients of the clinic attended to show their appreciation, including Amoy Henderson, who publicly expressed her gratitude to the crowd prior to the event.

“The clinic’s help was a true blessing,” she told the gathering.

The local judiciary was well represented, including Wayne County Circuit Chief Judge Colombo and many others from Wayne and Oakland counties along with key staffers from the Third Circuit’s Friend of the Court office.

“The clinic provides critical services to many of the Court’s self-represented litigants through its clinical programs and the Walk For Justice is a great way for the Third Circuit Court to show its appreciation,” said Zenell Brown, Wayne County Circuit Court administrator.

This year’s event featured a silent auction offering a wide variety of items and outings contributed by local businesses, artists and entrepreneurs.

The funds raised will help the clinic continue to provide high quality legal services for low income families and individuals throughout metro Detroit.
Since 1994, clinic has been providing legal counsel to participants of The Salvation Army Detroit Harbor Light System as well as individuals within the community at or below the poverty level.
