Bielski Brothers exhibit coming to Memorial Center

A new exhibit will be on display at the Holocaust Memorial Center Zekelman Family Campus in Farmington Hills, beginning on Sunday, July 15. The exhibit, "Courage and Compassion: The Legacy of the Bielski Brothers," details the resistance group operating against the Nazis during the occupation of Poland and Belarus. Their story was made famous in the 2008 movie, "Defiance," with Daniel Craig portraying Tuvia Bielski, the group's leader. The Holocaust Memorial Center is located at 28123 Orchard Lake Road in Farmington Hills. The exhibit, which will be on display through Nov. 4, begins with life in Belarus, accounts of escape and the formation of probably the most famous partisan detachment. Through panels, artifacts and interactive displays, the exhibit shows the courage and commitment of this intrepid band of rebels. Award-winning independent filmmaker and television editor Sharon Rennert, who recently made the documentary, "In Our Hands: A Personal Story of the Bielski Partisans," will deliver the keynote address at the opening ceremony on Sunday, July 15, at 2:30 p.m. Rennert is the granddaughter of the famed partisan Tuvia Bielski, who, along with brothers Zus and Asael, refused to succumb to the hopeless circumstances of the Holocaust, took fate into their own hands and kindled a flame of hope in the hearts of Jews searching for sense and meaning during one of their darkest times in history. Sharon Rennert has been editing and producing documentary series and television specials for nearly 20 years. She is an active member of the Editor's Guild, and is currently working on "The Bachelor" for ABC and "The Real World" for MTV. The Holocaust Memorial Center is wheelchair accessible and free parking is available at both the North and South entrances.
