Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act subject of next Legal Milestone
A historic civil rights act endorsing equality and inclusiveness will be the subject of the State Bar's 37th Michigan Legal Milestone dedication on Tuesday, Aug. 28, at the state Capitol building in Lansing.
The noon program will highlight the 1976 Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act (ELCRA) which prohibits discriminatory practices in employment, education, housing, public service, real estate transactions and the use of public accommodations because of race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, or marital status.
A panel of speakers will discuss the history and significance of ELCRA and its impact on the state and the nation. The ceremony will close with the unveiling of a bronze plaque commemorating the Act. State Bar of Michigan President Julie Fershtman and SBM Executive Director Janet Welch will share the duties of master of ceremonies.
Speakers will include:
· Rep. Fred Durhal Jr., Michigan House of Representatives.
· Mel Larsen, co-sponsor of ELCRA.
· Aliyah Sabree, niece of Daisy Elliott, co-sponsor of ELCRA.
· Dr. Daniel Krichbaum, director, Michigan Department of Civil Rights.
· Janene McIntyre, president, Davis-Dunnings Bar Association.
· Professor John Nussbaumer, associate dean, Thomas M. Cooley Law School.
The award-winning Michigan Legal Milestones Program recognizes significant cases, events and personalities in our state's history. It is overseen by the State Bar of Michigan Law-Related Education and Public Outreach Committee, chaired by Jeffrey Paulsen and Margaret Krasnoff. The Davis-Dunnings Bar Association is the State Bar's partner in the ELCRA milestone dedication.
