Legal Aid and Defender Association Inc. (LAD) conducted a free workshop for residents of Wayne, Macomb and Oakland counties on how to represent themselves in small claims court and collect money judgments on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Mack Alive Inc. Community Resource Center.

The workshop was one of a series conducted by LAD as part of its broad based advocacy program.

“Small claims court is just for settling money disputes, currently up to $5,000,” said Michelle Johnson, supervising attorney of LAD’s Detroit-Wayne office.

Because LAD’s presentation provides general information and not legal advice, they should discuss the specifics of their cases with an attorney, Johnson told attendees. They cannot be represented in small claims court by an attorney, however, she pointed out.
