Investing in Abilities: Lt. Gov. and Board recognizes local restaurant

On Friday, Oct. 11, Mich. Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley presented a proclamation to Carrabba’s Italian Grill in Novi in recognition of the company employing workers with all levels of abilities.

This event highlighted October 2013 as Investing in Abilities Month in Michigan and Oakland County showcasing the Novi business for investing in disabled employees and the service agencies supporting these employees.

This event comes after the recent bi-partisan resolution of Oakland County Commissioners Marcia Gershenson and Bill Dwyer supporting Investing in Abilities Month, in conjunction with October being National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Their resolution was brought before the full Board of Commissioners as a way to highlight the month.

A proclamation signed by Commissioners Marcia Gershenson, Kathy Crawford, and Bill Dwyer was presented to a representative from Carrabba’s Italian Grill. Service agencies providing support to prepare disabled workers were also present, including: JARC and the JVS (Jewish Vocational Services). JARC is a non-sectarian, non-profit founded in 1969, by parents concerned about the future of children with disabilities.

Today, over 200 adults are residents JARC group homes and various supported independent living arrangements serving men and women with developmental disabilities in 58 homes, apartments and condominiums.   JARC also provides a range of programs for children and adults living at home with their families, including in-home respite services, inclusive education and recreation services, advocacy, life planning, and social opportunities.

JVS helps people meet life challenges affecting their self-sufficiency through counseling, training and support services in accordance with Jewish values of equal opportunity, compassion, responsibility and  the belief that the best way to help people is to make it possible for them to help themselves.
