State Bar initiative educates seniors

On Wednesday, Aug. 6, members of the State Bar of Michigan (SBM) Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee, in partnership with members of the SBM Elder Law and Disability Rights Section and SBM Probate and Estate Planning Section, visited senior centers in 51 Michigan counties to present a one-hour seminar to inform senior citizens about estate planning decisions.

Presenting “A Living Trust Education Initiative: Who Should You Trust? Avoiding Estate Planning Mistakes”?at the Birmingham Senior Center were (left to right) Jill Koney Daly, probate register for the Oakland County Probate Court, and Thomas F. Sweeney of Clark Hill PLC.

The seminar provided senior citizens, including veterans applying for benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, with essential estate planning information and warnings about deceptive sales practices that could potentially jeopardize seniors’ economic stability.
