PHOTO #1: On Thursday, April 2, 2015, the Oakland County Board of Commissioners presented a proclamation recognizing April as Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month to CARE House of Oakland County at the board meeting in the Board of Commissioners’ Auditorium in Pontiac.  CARE House Executive Director Pat Rosen (center) happily accepted the proclamation from Commissioners Helaine Zack (left) Shelley Goodman Taub (right).  “With recent stories of child abuse and neglect being reported, it is important that attention be given to CARE House and that the public is informed about the help that is available for children who are being abused,” said Goodman Taub.  CARE House, formed in 1977, is part of the Child Abuse and Neglect Council of Oakland County.

PHOTO #2: Following the proclamation presentation, members of the Board of Commissioners were joined by CARE House community partners and members to plant a Pinwheel Garden by the statue of Lady Justice in the courtyard of the Oakland County Courthouse in Pontiac.  The Pinwheel Garden will serve as a symbol and reminder for Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month in Oakland County.  Ready to plant a pinwheel were (front row, left to right) Michigan Youth Opportunity Initiative President Alisha Perry and CARE House of Oakland County Director of Advocacy Chuck Ludwig, along with (back row, left to right) Oakland County Commissioners David Woodward, David Bowman, Gary McGillivray, Bob Gosselin, Janet Jackson, Michael Spisz, John Scott, Philip Weipert, Bob Hoffman,  Board Vice Chairman Jeff Matis, Shelley Goodman Taub, Thomas Middleton, Christine Long, Michigan State Senator Marty Knollenberg, Commissioner Hugh Crawford, Board Chairman Michael Gingell, and Commissioner Wade Fleming.  More than just an awareness campaign, the pinwheel is the symbol of child abuse prevention. The pinwheel connotes whimsy and childlike notions serving as the physical embodiment, or reminder, of the happy, healthy, and carefree childhoods all children deserve.
