Doctor who mistreated many will appeal sentence

DETROIT (AP) - A Detroit-area doctor who misled people into believing they had cancer says he'll appeal his 45-year prison sentence.

A brief notice was filed last week in Detroit federal court. In the months ahead, the case will be heard at an appeals court in Cincinnati.

Dr. Farid Fata was paid millions of dollars by insurance companies while poisoning more than 500 people through needless treatments. He was sentenced in July, months after pleading guilty.

Fata said he had a "self-destructive" thirst for power.

The government so far has recovered more than $13 million from the doctor. Victims will get a share.
