Drug addict convicted in fatal carjacking

PONTIAC (AP) - A heroin addict who walked away from a drug treatment center in suburban Detroit has been convicted of carjacking a pickup truck at a Burger King and killing the 76-year-old owner as he tried to stop her.

Ruth Pozdol was found guilty last Thursday in Oakland County court and faces life in prison. Earlier, she told jurors that she didn't plan to hurt Clifford Van Haywald and just "wanted to get high."

Police say Pozdol snatched keys from Van Haywald and drove over him when he fell under the tires.

She had just walked away from a drug treatment center. The incident occurred in January at a Burger King in Waterford Township.

Pozdol drove the pickup to Detroit, sold it for $200 and bought heroin.
