Groups raising money for rape kit tests

DETROIT (AP) - A coalition of women's groups is coming together to raise awareness about sexual assault and help get old rape kits tested.

The Detroit Free Press reports the African American 490 Challenge is urging black women, individually and collectively, to raise multiples of $490 - the cost of processing a single rape kit. The group kicks off its efforts at a gathering today.

The African American 490 Challenge is working with Enough SAID (Enough Sexual Assault In Detroit) and plans to raise at least $650,000

Officials said last month that more than 10,000 sexual assault kits dating back decades that were found in a Detroit police property storage facility have been tested. The kits were among 11,341 found in 2009 for sexual assaults that occurred as far back as 1984.
