Investigator says money taken from Oak Park went to everyday purchases

OAK PARK (AP) — An investigator says $433,000 missing from a Detroit suburb is gone, spent by an award-winning employee and her husband.

Stephanie Sumner waived a key hearing last Thursday and was ordered to trial in Oakland County court. She was a deputy city clerk in Oak Park for about three years until she was fired last spring.

Sumner and husband Michael Sumner are charged with stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars. Sgt. Christopher Cole of the sheriff’s office says the money was spent on everyday items.

Stephanie Sumner is accused of submitting bogus invoices to Oak Park to issue checks to her husband, a part-time election worker. The city says the losses were covered by insurance.

The Daily Tribune says Michael Sumner asked for a court-appointed lawyer last Thursday.
