The Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association Foundation held its 11th annual Dennis W. Archer Public Service Award reception and awards program Nov. 19 at the Detroit Institute of Arts. The prestigious award was presented to U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan Chief Judge Gerald Rosen and retired U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Michigan Judge Steven Rhodes in recognition of their tireless contributions to the Detroit bankruptcy case, the largest municipal bankruptcy in the nation's history. Rosen served as the chief judicial mediator for the bankruptcy, and Rhodes approved the "grand bargain" for the bankruptcy that saw $7 billion of the city's long-term debt erased, allowing for the process of recovery to begin.

The DMBA Foundation has presented the Archer Award for more than a decade to a member of the legal profession whose commitment to public service goes above and beyond the call of duty. Since 2003, the award has been reserved for the best of the best of Michigan's legal profession - extraordinary lawyers and judges who have established careers dedicated to the betterment of both the profession and the community.

Past recipients include Dennis W. Archer (2003); Daniel G. Mulhern (2005); Carl M. Levin (2006); Damon J. Keith (2007); Eugene Driker (2008); Saul A. Green (2009); Jennifer M. Granholm (2010); Maura D. Corrigan (2011); Victoria A. Roberts (2012); Harold Hood (2013); John D. Dingell Jr. (2014).
