Wayne State University Law School recently honored two attorneys for their pro-bono work with the law school’s Advocates for Warriors project, which provides support to military service members, veterans and the family members of both.

G. Christopher Bernard, a Wayne Law class of 2000 alumnus and attorney with Bodman in Ann Arbor, and Solomon Radner, a Wayne Law class of 2010 alumnus and an attorney with Excolo Law, received the project’s inaugural Lawyers for Warriors Awards. Wayne Law Dean Jocelyn Benson presented the awards at an event Thursday, March 10, in the law school’s Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights.

Providing opening remarks was former U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, chair of the Levin Center at Wayne Law, the law school’s distinguished legislator in residence, senior counsel to Honigman, Miller, Schwartz, and Cohn LLP, and former chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Also speaking was Ashley Lowe, the law school’s associate director of clinical education and director of the Advocates for Warriors project.

The event also recognized all of the student volunteers, pro-bono attorneys and the student Wayne Law Veterans Association for their work with Advocates for Warriors.

Advocates for Warriors began as a pilot project in Macomb County in early 2014. Less than a year later, it expanded to include Wayne and Oakland counties, and today it collaborates with other Michigan law schools to provide client intake, legal services and pro-bono referrals statewide.

Since its inception, Advocates for Warriors has provided referrals to legal services in estate planning, bankruptcy, criminal defense, traffic violations, driver’s license restoration, family law, civil litigation, immigration law and business formation.
